from a friend wrote in another symbolic group:
“Certainly, God works with “both hands.” As in everything, He resolves that ambivalence. “Every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a house who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.” This is the same dialectic seen in the pair of Elizabeth and Mary in the conception of John and Jesus. Elizabeth represents the old (she herself is elderly) and recapitulates the ancient stories of barren and/or elderly women; she signifies the continuity of tradition. Mary, on the other hand, is young, the new, and conceives in an unprecedented way; she is the prophetic breakthrough. Both are part of the same movement of God, directed toward the manifestation of Christ, which is the manifestation of the knowledge of God.
Elizabeth-barrenness and Mary-virginity are like two complementary poles in which God prevails, demonstrating that fatherhood is ultimately always His. Here, a connection emerges with the canticle of Hannah, which she sang after conceiving Samuel and which informs the Magnificat that Mary proclaims before Elizabeth, as well as with the name of the Archangel Gabriel. However, diving into the nuances of Hebrew words would require a deeper exploration, and I wouldn’t want to seem (too) pedantic.”
